The American Ornithological Society’s (AOS) 2021 awards cycle is open! Read on for important information about nominating members to serve on Council and for recognition as Fellows and Elective Members. Every year we stress how the AOS depends on you, our members, to participate in the Society’s efforts to celebrate ornithologists who have made notable contributions to our science and our Society by offering nominations for achievement, publication, and service awards. AOS is grateful for the breadth, depth, and diversity of our community—we are stronger together.
STEP ONE (read this first): You will first need to activate your member account in the NEW AOS Member Portal before submitting your nomination or application online. Please check your inbox for a recent email from AOS containing details on how to activate your account.
Student & Postdoc Awards
Membership Awards: Do you know a student who is interested in joining the AOS? AOS awards one year gratis student memberships to students new to the Society from anywhere in the world who are interested in pursuing a career in ornithology. Qualified applicants for Student Membership Awards receive the full benefits of AOS membership through December 2021.

Research Awards: Applications are now open for our Student Research Awards. AOS grants annual Student Research Awards of up to $2,500 to support research in all areas of avian science by undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs. AOS encourages students and postdocs from any region to apply.

2021 Society Awards
Please nominate your colleagues, mentees, or mentors for AOS’s prestigious awards. The eligibility criteria and award details are presented for the Senior Professional Awards, Early Professional Awards, Service Awards, and Publication Awards on our website. Let us know if you have questions! Awards are announced in the spring and presented at AOS’s 2021 Annual Meeting, which will be hosted virtually from 9–14 August 2021.

AOS Council Class of 2021
All AOS members are invited to submit nominations for open positions on the AOS Council, the Society’s governing body. This year the Society will elect four Elective Councilors and the officers of Secretary and Treasurer. Nominations require the consent of the nominee and can be submitted via our Member Portal. Full details, including instructions for submitting nominations, are on the AOS website. Elections will be held in spring 2021.

Fellows & Elective Members Class of 2021
We invite nominations for consideration for AOS’s Special Membership Classes of Elective Member and Fellow, which recognize members for their exceptional contributions to ornithology and/or to AOS. Current Elective Members and Fellows may submit full nominations. Please note that members of these Special Membership Classes are no longer required to be residents of the Western Hemisphere. Full details, including instructions for submitting nominations, are on the AOS website.

Announcing the New Florence Merriam Bailey Award
AOS Council is extremely pleased to announce a new publication award in honor of Florence Merriam Bailey, a pioneering woman in ornithology and an icon in our Society. The annual Florence Merriam Bailey Award will recognize an outstanding article in our journals authored by an early career ornithologist. The inaugural award will be announced in the spring and presented at the virtual 2021 Annual Meeting.
