The AOS Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Committee seeks to add up to six new members starting in January 2025. The D&I Committee is engaged in efforts to continually improve diversity and inclusion within AOS and ornithology. We work to ensure that voices of marginalized communities are included and considered in important conversations within the Society. For more on AOS’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ), please see the AOS DEIBJ Values Statement. Members typically serve a three-year term, and the committee typically meets monthly to discuss ideas and work on projects collectively.
Past or ongoing efforts of the AOS D&I Committee include:
- Advising the Executive Committee and Council on matters pertaining to DEIBJ
- Leading or supporting public forums or workshops on issues related to DEIBJ
- Facilitating the AOS D&I Travel Grants, Latin America & Caribbean Travel Grants, and Caregiver Grants
- Organizing other conference activities aimed at providing diverse perspectives on ornithology
- Collecting information on AOS demographics and climate
Applicants must be members of AOS (join or renew your membership here), and have attended at least one AOS Annual Meeting in the past.
We welcome participation from members of the community from all backgrounds and all countries, across all career stages (including graduate students and postdocs), and in all career paths. We hope to recruit members who are committed working productively and collaboratively towards improving the DEIJB goals of the AOS. We will consider the entire application as a whole to help us create a balanced committee with diverse perspectives and interests.
Applicants should submit an application by 5:00 p.m. ET on 30 November 2024. Applications will be reviewed by current members of the AOS D&I Committee. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the committee chairs at dshizuka2@unl.edu or nancy.chen@rochester.edu.
