New AOS editorial assistance program for non-native English speakers

The American Ornithological Society (AOS) journals, Ornithology and Ornithological Applications, are excited to announce a new Peer Editing Program that provides English-language editing assistance for AOS members whose primary language is not English.

International scientists, and those who primarily work and write in languages other than English, can face substantial barriers when publishing their research in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Therefore, the AOS is piloting an English-language editing service to assist authors before their articles are sent out for peer review. The program will pair ornithologists with a Peer Editor to provide timely feedback on their manuscript on such topics as grammar, word choice, and sentence structure.

Peer Editors are focused on providing editorial assistance; they will not review the scientific content of the manuscript. We are evaluating this service as a member benefit in the future, and will use this pilot year to collect information about interest in and need for this type of program across the ornithological community, as well as the logistics of administering this program.  We encourage you to join the AOS to take advantage of this program and many of the other wonderful benefits the AOS provides its members. During the pilot year, we are also offering free AOS-sponsored memberships to anyone wishing to take advantage of this program for whom the cost to join the AOS is a barrier.

To submit a manuscript for consideration for our Peer Editing Program, please see our Instructions for Authors

Questions about the program, including requests for an AOS-sponsored membership, may be directed to Christie Riehl (criehl@americanornithology.org) or the Senior Peer Editor, Jim Rivers (jim.rivers@oregonstate.edu).
