One of the core functions of the American Ornithological Society (AOS) is to create and sustain a welcoming, supportive community that fosters a sense of belonging for ornithologists representing a variety of interests, backgrounds, career paths, and needs. We have a suite of resources available to support this mission.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice (DEIBJ) Values Statement
We are proud to introduce a revised statement that strengthens and expands the AOS’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ). To help guide our conversations around these core values, we are also pleased to share a set of definitions for these five important terms.
Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Committee
Our D&I Committee works to foster diversity and inclusion within our Society and ornithology. This committee sponsors a range of activities including travel awards focused on increasing broadening participation. Meet our D&I Committee members.
Travel Awards in Support of Diversity & Inclusion
As part of our ongoing efforts to foster a diverse and inclusive community, the AOS is proud to offer Travel Awards in Support of Diversity & Inclusion to support individuals from underrepresented groups and/or those who have made significant contributions towards fostering a diverse and inclusive community. Membership in the AOS is not required to be eligible for these awards.
Latin America & Caribbean Travel Awards (new in 2023)
The AOS is proud to offer Latin America and Caribbean Travel Awards supporting individuals who are from, reside, and study in Latin America and the Caribbean. Membership in the AOS is not required to be eligible for these awards.
Latin America & Caribbean Research Grant (new in 2023)
The Conservation Committee of the American Ornithological Society (AOS) is dedicated to the study and conservation of migratory and resident birds throughout their full annual life cycle, and supporting the research endeavors and career development of student/early-career scientists in areas with a lower availability of research funding. Accordingly, the AOS Conservation Committee has initiated the Latin America & Caribbean Research Grant, a grant program to support student/early-career scientists from Latin America and the Caribbean conducting conservation-related research on either migratory or resident birds in those regions.
Faces of AOS
Part of the AOS’s mission is to enrich ornithology as a profession, and we support a strong community by celebrating our members as individuals, each with our own strengths, challenges, backgrounds, interests, and abilities. Our “Faces of AOS” series highlights AOS members from throughout our community.
