Panelists:
Yangkang Chen, Ph.D. candidate at University of Illinois
Matt Strimas-Mackey, data scientist at Cornell Lab of Ornithology
This webinar shares practical approaches to working with large ecological datasets, using eBird observations and eBird Status & Trends products as examples. We will discuss choosing data products and tools, building a small, complete “minimum viable analysis,” and scaling workflows through manageable tasks and appropriate computing resources. We will explore when parallel computing is useful, highlight common pitfalls involving sampling bias, observation effort, and uncertainty, and point to resources for further guidance. The session will include time for questions and discussion. Target audience: Students and researchers interested in ecological big-data analysis are welcome, especially those new to working with large datasets. This event was organized by Sara Padula and Raven the troodontid
