SUMMARY:Assessing the long-term impacts of chronic infection with avian malaria in Hawai‘i ‘amakihi
DESCRIPTION:AOS Student Research Grant Seminar\nPresenter: Emma Stierhoff\, M.Sc. graduate\, University of Hawai‘i; AOS 2022 Student Research Grant winner\n \n \nWhile Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi have demonstrated lower mortality to acute infection with avian malaria than other native honeycreepers\, little is known about the impacts after this acute stage\, as they remain chronically infected with low-level parasitemia. Research done by scientists at the University of Hawaiʻi\, National Parks Service\, and United States Geological Survey in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park over the course of three years elucidated some of these effects. Results from this study suggest that Hawaiʻi ʻamakihi surviving the acute stage of infection may not suffer negative long-term impacts to their fitness. \nMore about the Student Research Grant Seminar Series

SUMMARY:Impact of gut microbiome modulation on nesting house sparrow physiology
DESCRIPTION:AOS Student Research Grant Seminar\nPresenter: Kristen Rosamond\, Ph.D. candidate\, University of Missouri-St. Louis; AOS 2023 Josselyn Van Tyne Memorial Research Grant winner \n  \n \nThe gut microbiome undergoes succession in early life and plays a key role in shaping host immunity\, and perturbations during this time period can have lasting consequences for physiological function. Here\, I aimed to experimentally disrupt the gut microbiome of wild house sparrow nestlings using probiotics or antibiotics\, followed by an immune challenge to explore whether such manipulations impact host physiology. SUMMARY:Geometric morphometrics of the avian skull related to the presence of the postorbital ligament
DESCRIPTION:AOS Student Research Grant Seminar\nPresenter: Samantha Gartner\, Assistant Professor\, East Stroudsburg University; AOS 2024 Postdoctoral Research Grant winner\n \n \nPrevious work on cranial ligaments in birds has found the postorbital ligament to affect the cranial kinesis of the bird skull. This talk attempts to integrate skeletal shape with the presence or absence of the postorbital ligament. We find no large scale patterns across the bird phylogeny and instead find smaller scale patterns between sister groups\, indicating the potential plasticity of the evolution of cranial ligaments. \nMore about the Student Research Grant Seminar Series

SUMMARY:How do chickadees communicate about the presence and absence of food?
DESCRIPTION:AOS Student Research Grant Seminar\nPresenter: Clay Jones\, Ph.D. student\, University of California Davis; AOS 2023 Josselyn Van Tyne Memorial Research Grant winner \n  \n \nForaging as part of a group can afford social animals benefits such as increased protection from predators and opportunities for social learning\, but not much is known about how animals communicate about variation in food availability or maintain group cohesion while foraging. Carolina Chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) form winter foraging flocks and produce complex\, compositional calls at food sources\, potentially to recruit group members and strengthen social bonds. In a field experiment\, I analyzed differences in Carolina Chickadee vocalizations produced when food was available versus when food access was unexpectedly blocked. This research lends insight into how animals communicate at food sources and share information about changing food conditions\, which could aid their survival in unpredictable environments. \nMore about the Student Research Grant Seminar Series

AOS 2026 attendees are invited to attend this event. \nIn the face of challenges and uncertainties around funding\, employment\, academic freedoms\, civil liberties\, social values\, conservation efforts\, and more\, building community is more important than ever. Given the success of a similar community-building event last year\, we invite you all to gather once more for a community discussion and support session. \nAOS representatives will share Society responses to U.S. federal policy changes so far. SUMMARY:Drivers of Rapid Phenotypic and Species Diversification
DESCRIPTION:AOS Research Grant Seminar\nPresenter: Jenna McCullough\, NSF Postdoctoral Fellow\, Natural History Museum of Los Angles County and University of California\, Los Angeles; AOS 2025 Kessel Fellowship winner  \n  \nJenna McCullough\n  \nAs an evolutionary biologist and ornithologist\, I study the tempo and mode of avian evolution—why some bird lineages diversify rapidly while others do not. Natural history museums provide a powerful foundation for addressing these questions by preserving the phenotypic\, genomic\, and ecological record of life through time\, allowing us to connect microevolutionary processes with macroevolutionary patterns. My work spans broad phylogenetic\, geographic\, and phenotypic scales\, linking mechanisms underlying trait evolution—such as color production—to their diversification across species and clades. In this talk\, I will discuss how I use geographic radiations across the Indo-Pacific to revisit historical theories of island evolution and speciation through the lens of modern genomic and phenotypic technologies. \nMore about the Research Grant Seminar Series

SUMMARY:Bird necessities: the importance of small forest islands for behavior in a tropical savanna
DESCRIPTION:AOS Research Grant Seminar\nPresenter: Valentina Gómez-Bahamón\, Assistant Professor\, Virginia Tech; 2023 AOS Latin American and Caribbean Conservation Research Grant \n  \nValentina Gómez-Bahamón\nSavanna birds in the tropics depend on small forest islands for nesting\, roosting\, foraging\, displaying\, escaping predators\, and other essential daily activities. Unfortunately\, these islands are rapidly disappearing as savannas are converted into extensive monocultures of exotic timber species and crops. To understand how birds use these habitats and which ecological characteristics are most important\, we studied bird behavior and habitat attributes across forest islands in the Colombian Orinoquía. I will present the main findings of this research\, highlighting how forest island heterogeneity supports bird communities and the behaviors they depend on. I will also discuss how this work has expanded research for conservation at the Tomogrande Biological Field Station\, contributed to mentoring local early-career researchers\, and fostered outreach activities with local communities to promote the conservation of tropical savanna ecosystems. \nMore about the Research Grant Seminar Series

DESCRIPTION:AOS Research Grant Seminar\nPresenter: Chelsi Marolf\, Visiting Assistant Professor\, Nebraska Wesleyan University; 2025 Werner and Hildegard Hesse Research Grant winner \n  \nChelsi Marolf\nAnimals in temperate regions are facing changing environmental conditions\, including more frequent extreme weather events. Small temperate birds are highly flexible\, increasing their metabolic rates during prolonged exposure to cold winter temperatures. However\, the mechanisms underlying this flexibility remain incompletely understood. In this study\, I assessed whole-genome DNA methylation in house sparrows exposed to warm\, cold\, and fluctuating cold acclimation treatments. Because DNA methylation is an epigenetic marker that can influence gene expression\, I expected methylation patterns to differ between cold-exposed and warm-exposed birds. \nMore about the Research Grant Seminar Series
